It’s important to be healthy, but sometimes sports and fitness can veer into an obsession. If you’ve started dating someone and you notice they’re fixated on protein content or they count every mile they run, you may be dating a fitness or sports fanatic. Before they get out of hand, you may want to nip it in the bud.
#1 All they do is talk about the gym or sports
If your significant other is stuck just talking about abs, glutes, and reps conversations can start to get boring really fast. It’s no different than sports fanatics yammering on about their favorite teams. If you’re starting to fall asleep every time they open their mouth, it’s time to have a chat. Explain to them that you love them very much and are completely supportive of their love of sports or fitness, but all the shop talk makes your eyes glaze over. Just as you choose not to blather on about your favorite TV show your partner has no interest in, it’s only fair for your honey to keep the technical talk to themselves. Or at least share it with a fellow fanatic. Instead ask them to share their accomplishments in regular terms and leave it at that.
#2 They want to look like a pro-athlete
Just as some women want to starve themselves to look thin, some men want to bulk up to an almost abnormal degree. Compulsive exercise is one symptom. Wanting to look fit and healthy is one thing, but wanting to look like a pro-athlete is a sign that your partner may be going too far. To resolve this situation, make sure to compliment your partner’s appearance letting them know you like them just the way they are.
#3 Everything is a workout
Whether the two of you are on vacation or just going to the supermarket, it seems as though everything has become an opportunity to work out. For example, you want to relax on a Costa Rican beach and they want to go hiking in the jungle. Or they want to do lunges while waiting in line at the cashier. Make sure to keep indulging in your own interests, even if your partner needs to work out. If they need to go the gym, don’t let it stop you from enjoying a frosty drink on the beach. |
