Who needs a staycation when you have a motorhome? With a motorhome you can go just about anywhere and you can do it cheaply. Even in the winter! Yes the winter. Most people think they have to put away their RV’s for the winter, but if you prepare your RV properly you can in fact camp even when it’s cold outside.
First off, take a look at your RV's plumbing to determine what you need to do to prevent damage from freezing temps. If your RV has plumbing exposed to the outside, you will need to wrap the exposed pipes with heat tape and foam pipe insulation.
Some RV's have enclosed holding tanks that are heated by the RV's furnace. As long as the furnace runs sometimes, the tanks won't freeze unless it's extremely cold. If your tank is not heated or enclosed, you can easily attach a tank heating pad to the bottom of the tank.
Keep your water valves closed until you are ready to dump your holding tanks to prevent water to form an ice dam in your sewer hose. Your fresh water supply hose is susceptible to freezing as well. You can use a heated water hose if you have access to an electrical hookup.
Insulate your windows and windshield from the cold with thick drapes. You can also cover the windows with heavy vinyl. Place foam pillows specifically designed for vent openings in the roof vents. Use weather seals to help protect against air leaks.
To prevent condensation, use the range hood vent when cooking and the bathroom vent when taking a shower. A dehumidifier may be necessary as well. You don’t want mildew or mold growing after all!
As you can see if you take all the precautionary measures, you can your partner can enjoy your love of camping year-round! |
