Did you know American football was a game originated by the Ancient Greeks? Ah but yes it’s true. The point of the game was simply to kick the ball across the line.
However, contemporary versions of football started off in England. In later centuries, football became more popular than a homecoming queen. It was so popular, it began to take interest away from archery. By the mid 19th century, football had split into two different sports; soccer and rugby.
The first professional football game in the United States took place in 1895 in a little itty bitty town called Latrobe, Pennsylvania, between a team representing Latrobe and a team from Jeannette, Pennsylvania. In the subsequent years, many professional teams were formed. Alas they didn’t have cheerleaders yet, but they were just as festive.
The teams included the Duquesnes of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Olympics of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the Bulldogs of Canton, Ohio, and the team of Massillon, Ohio.
It was all fun and games until 1933 when the first super official championship was held. Americans fell in love with the sport and in 1958 football became known as “The Greatest Game Ever Played". Yes, even more popular than baseball. After all, baseball players don’t injure each other. In 1965, football surpassed baseball as the most popular televised sport in all the land. Of the United States that is. By 1970, the expanded league created the Super Bowl which has become the most-watched yearly sporting event in the U.S. |
